Fromm was founded in the early 1990’s by Georg Fromm, a 4th generation Swiss winemaker, with the help of his friend Hätsch Kalberer.
Hätsch’s experience in traditional European winemaking and understanding the New Zealand way of wine proved invaluable in helping Georg establish the vineyard. From the beginning there was a conscientious decision to look after the health of the vineyard and farm organically, not for commercial reasons but for genuine concern for the lands, plants and the environment.
Fromm's philosophy is to truly understand each site, and the soils, and let each vintage express itself in the wine. The vines are very close-planted (4,700 vines/hectare) and cropped low allowing Fromm to craft texturally rich and intensely flavoured wines.
Pinot Noir makes up around 50% of Fromm’s production with the La Strada Pinot Noir, a multi-vineyard blend, three terroir-driven wines – Fromm Vineyard, Clayvin Vineyard and Brancott Valley, each clearly expressing the uniqueness of the site and vintage.
Other classic wines include two premium Chardonnays, the single vineyard ‘Chablis’ style Clayvin Chardonnay is intensely flavoured, flinty and dry and ages very well, a dark coloured, intensely spicy northern Rhone style Syrah, and their speciality Malbec, almost opaque in colour with firm tannins and intense blackcurrant flavours.
